Hoyos del Espino is in the province of Avila and is about two hours´ drive from Madrid (176km). To see a map click here . Madrid airport (Barajas) is serviced by many major airlines and has daily flights to and from most UK airports. Another possibility is to fly in to Valladolid. The village is accessible by bus from Madrid but to fully enjoy all that the area has to offer we recommend that you have your own transport. Car hire (all major companies) is readily available at Madrid airport. We have found that it can be cheaper to pre book car hire through the UK offices of these companies. We may be able to provide help, on request, for hiring larger vehicles by contacting local firms. The village has many amenities. There are a number of general stores, one of which is opposite the house. Bars and restaurants offer food until quite late at night (click here for some useful information on eating out) and are welcoming to children at any time. There is a bank with cash point, medical centre and a petrol station within 4km. For directions to the house click here. The Sierra de Gredos range forms part of the Sistema Central which runs from northeast of Madrid to the Portuguese border and is some 380km in length. The weather ranges from cold, bright winter days with snow to idyllic summer days that are more pleasant than the extreme heat of the surrounding plains and yet hot enough to enjoy swimming in the mountain rivers. The World Heritage Sites of Avila (63km), Salamanca (117km), Segovia (126km), Toledo (148km) are all within reach by car, as are a vast number of other tourist destinations, such as Monfragüe (122km) and the Jerte Valley (60km) Maps. You can get the Mapas Topográficos Excursionistas (1:25,000 and 1:135,000) Parque Regional de la Sierra de Gredos from Stanfords in London - telephone 0207 836 1321 or www.stanfords.co.uk |
